Tips On Taking Self Portraits

Hey there fellow tog friend! If you are wanting tips on taking self portraits then you’ve come to the right place. I’ve listed 3 tips below to really nail down the shots you have your heart set on capturing.

I am a family and maternity photographer based out of Sarasota, FL. My household consists of 4 children all under 2 years apart in age! I, being a photographer know how chaotic it can be to get out there and get family photos done with kiddos. Being somewhat picky of family photos I wanted to give this a shot and do our own! Read below to see how I mastered taking photos of my entire family with a tripod, husband and camera!

1. Master using a tripod!

Now I am no expert, but I do know that a tripod is a MUST for self portraits.. This will allow you to adjust the height and angles of what you are wanting to capture. Before you tell your camera to please take the most amazing photo ever, you will have to set up a timer to give yourself time to run into the amazing landscape and family with open arms. For this specific photo here , I placed the tripod in front of us. I had all the kids swarm toward hubby and set the focus point on my camera to my husbands eyes. Once I ran in we all attempted to keep our posture and watch as the camera blinked for 10 seconds and wham! We came out with this favorite family photo of mine.

2. Syncing your camera with your phone

There also is a second option if you aren’t a fan of running in and out of the frame and working up a sweat. Syncing your camera with your phone and downloading your camera app will allow you to set up WiFi within the camera. You can then see the back of your camera on your phone! You can set the focus on yourself and hit the shutter button within your phone. When you do this you will have to either throw your phone to the side or hold your phone depending on the angle of which you’re wanting the photo taken. Can you say game changer!!!!

3. Let go of perfectionism and have fun with it!

This is the biggest struggle I had when I first started gathering my herd together and attempting photos. I have had my fair share of “I’m never doing this again” moments. Just like I would tell my clients, if you want those precious authentic moments to really hold near to your heart you have to let go of the perfectionism and realize children will get dirty, sandy, wet because they look at this as an adventure! And we should to. During this shoot my children had a sand throwing contest, but I bet you wouldn’t have a clue after seeing the gallery!

See below for my favorites from this session!

I hope these 3 tips on taking self portraits will kick start you to just get out there and give it a go!
